The Humorists applied this epithet to a humour, deprived of a part of its constituents, and particularly to the blood. This fluid was considered to be impoverished when it was pale, without the proper consistence, and abounding in serum. It was, on the contrary, rich, in their opinion, when of a scarlet colour; possessing consistence; when it coagulated promptly, and the quantity of serum, compared with that of the clot, was by no means considerable.
