A Polish poet; born 1803, in Ilinze in the Ukraine; died in Lemberg, Feb. 25, 1876. The influence of Byron is unmistakable in his youthful "Castle of Kanioff". In the struggle for independence in 1830 he achieved brilliant feats of arms, and composed national odes that spread his fame throughout Europe. Polish freedom proving a chimera, he wandered through France and Switzerland, writing poetry and prose as occasion served. "The Terrible Huntsman", "The Three Chords", and "Dziela" are powerful poems.
