n. [Italian] A keyed musical instrument, so called from the facility with which the performer can give a soft or strong expression to its tones. It consists of a series of wires of graduated length, thickness, and tension, struck by hammers moved by the notes on a keyboard, and inclosed in an ornamental work of mahogany, rose, walnut, or other polished wood. The strings are horizontal with the keyboard in the grand and square pianos; and perpendicular into upright or cottage.
