The doctrine of necessity is that liberty can be predicated only of actions done in consequence of volitions; but not of the volitions themselves; of which last motives, they say, are the cause; while the doctrine of liberty is that motives are not the cause, but the occasion. Calvinists have generally been Necessitarians.
