An American general in the Civil War; born in Washington, D. C., Dec. 17, 1824. He joined the Federal Army in 1861, and continued in active service until the close of the war. His publications include: "From Fort Henry to Corinth" (1881); "Marching Across Carolina" (1883); "The Mound Builders"; "Prehistoric Man"; and "Personal Recollections of the Vicksburg Campaign" (1885). Died 1899.
