A Roman poet of the 4th century (310-94); born at Bordeaux. He stood in high favor with the emperors Valentinian and Gratian. One of his most ambitious poems is a fulsome eulogy of Gratian. He wrote a number of "Idyls", "Elegies", and "Epistles". He is at his best in "The Moselle", one of his idyls, in which he describes a voyage on that river and the Rhine.
