The Dogstar, from canis, 'a dog;', Sirius, (F.) Canicule. This star, which gives its name to the Dogdays, Dies canicula'res, because they commence when the sun rises with it, was formerly believed to exert a powerful influence on the animal economy. The Dogdays occur at a period of the year when there is generally great and oppressive heat, and therefore-it has been conceived-a greater liability to disease.
