A mixture of 1 part of mercury bichlorid dissolved in 6 parts of water, 2 1/2 parts of potassium iodid dissolved in 6 of water, and 6 of caustic potash dissolved in 6 of water, the whole being then diluted to 36 parts; used for the detection of ammonium or its salts by producing a yellow or reddish brown color or a precipitate, according to the quantity of ammonium present.
