Under the fisheries treaty of 1871 between the United States and Great Britain, our fishermen were granted a participation in the Newfoundland fishing grounds. In January, 1878, in violation of these provisions, several Gloucester vessels were attacked by the natives at Fortune Bay, and driven away. Great Britain awarded damages of 15,000.
