A Spanish poet; born in Salamanca, Nov. 2, 1820; died in Madrid, July 1, 1881. Studied but did not practice medicine; afterwards went to Madrid, where he pursued journalism, and later on became director of the archaeological museum. Among his works are: "National Echoes", "Elegies" (considered masterpieces and translated into nearly all European languages); "The Book of the Fatherland" (1869); "Christmas Legend" (1872); Complete Works (Madrid, 1873).
