An American clergyman and author; born at Hebron, Conn., 1735; died in New York, 1826. He was ordained a minister in the Church of England at Hartford in 1760. In 1774 he sailed to England to escape persecution on account of his toryism, and in 1781 published the satirical "General History of Connecticut", which gave rise to the misconception as to "Blue Laws", which were in the brain of Peters instead of having ever been on the statute-books of Connecticut.
