A German naturalist and traveler; born at Neuwied, Sept. 23, 1782; died Feb. 3, 1867. He became major-general in the Prussian Army, but left it for scientific pursuits. He traveled in Brazil, 1815-17, and in 1833 went on a tour through the United States. As a result of these trips he wrote: "Travels in Brazil" (1820); "Descriptions of the Natural History of Brazil" (1824-33); and "A Journey through North America" (1833-43).
