A crystallizable substance, C12H8O4, obtained from faracoto. It resembles cotoin, but has not the same biting taste and fails to give with iron chlorid the red brown, afterward dark brown, coloration characteristic of cotoin. It is astringent and is used in diarrhea and dysentery.
