A French poet; born at Paris, April 21, 1771; died there, June 7, 1840. After many failures he made a brilliant success with his classical tragedy "Agamemnon" (1795). Elegance of versification, grace of style, and richness of fancy, characterize his "Four Metamorphoses" (1799), and "Pinto" (1800), a mixture of tragedy and comedy, in which he attempts to outdo "Figaro's Wedding". The most notable of his poems is the philosophical satire "The Panhypocrisiad, or Infernal Spectacle of the Sixteenth Century" (in 16 cantos; 4 more added in 1832).
