An English poet; born in Spofforth, Yorkshire (?), 1688; died at Coningsby, Lincolnshire, Sept. 27, 1730. He attracted much attention by his "Original Poems" (1714), "Ode for the New Year" (1720), and other poems, resulting in his appointment in 1718 as poet laureate.
