An American general; born in Cold Spring, N. Y., Jan. 8, 1830; died in Newport, R. I., Aug. 8, 1882. He graduated at West Point in 1850. He was a member of many scientific associations, and contributed to their journals. His published works include: "Explorations in the Dacota Country" (1855-56); "Explorations in Nebraska and Dakota" (1858); and a pamphlet, "The Battle of Five Forks" (1866), in which he had a notable part.
